ALMOST EVERYONE, at one time. or another; has had
A
some experience-a hunch, a run of luck, a premonition,
or a similarly puzzling event-which he could not satisfactorily
explain. Experiences such as these are the raw materials from
which the science of parapsychology took its beginnings. In
technical terms, parapsychology includes telepathy (extrasen-
"sory knowledge of another person's thoughts or mental states),
'clairvoyance (extrasensory knowledge of things or events); pre -.
cognition (foreknowledge), and psychokinesis ("mind : over
matter"). In general, they are covered by the term "psi."
In 1987, when the Journal of Parapsychology was founded,
the experimental study of this field was just at its beginning.
Today, with extrasensory perception a household term, there
is a large body of reliable and important information, world-
wide in its origin. It is the purpose. of the JOURNAL to report
and discuss this material.
First in importance in the contents of the JOURNAL are the
reports of experimental research. Other articles attempt to
interpret the findings and relate them to knowledge in various
fields. Still others are devoted to symposia on some of the
challenging questions that arise. There are also historical
reviews, discussions of unusual cases, a section on book reviews,
and another for abstracts of important articles from outside
sources, both foreign and domestic.
