Purpose of the activity is to gain power, influence, and
material rewards.
Mercenary motivations and a desire for status
are important factors.
The objective is to gain ascendancy
through the coercive value of wealth -- If you're rich you have
power to get richer at the expense of others.
Type of
activities:
covert, clandestine,
illegal, paralegal.
In some
places it is illegal to do what they want, in other places it's
"looked the other way. "
In some specific locations -- "bases" --
there's very little fear of outside interference.
sense that
it involves moving highly desirable material from one location
where it is obtainable, to an area where it is scarce and
therefore even more valuable.
The sense of "material" is rather
varied.
Some of it comes in discrete items, but some involves
also bulk material of different nature but no less attractive or
valuable for those seeking financial aggrandizement.
Fairly
broadbased situation -- reliance is not exclusively on one thing --
diversified "products. "
