EETLELIKE in the deep
blackness of space, Soyuz,
manned by two Soviet cos-
monauts, orbits 140 miles
above the storm-blanketed Black
Sea region. A mere 110 feet away,
the three-man Apollo team that
took this picture flies in tight
formation. The spacefarers are
high-flying ambassadors of dé-
tente, visible symbols of rival
nations cooperating in a demand-
ing challenge. After a dual launch
last July, the ships linked, and the
world saw Apollo Commander
Thomas P. Stafford (above, right)
reach out for a historic handclasp
with his Soviet counterpart, Alek-
sey A. Leonov.
