Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00789R001401080001-7 025 1 November 1988 Consciousness and Culture Culture provides a consensus reality throughout the developmental stages of life which include: Infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and senescence. People are biased regarding altered states of consciousness because it is generally believed that ordinary consciousness is our natural state of mind. Additionally, people have a false understanding of perception. multi-faceted social reality exists in our culture influencing our physical and perceptual views. Perception is a highly selective automatic system including preprogrammed decision making. In other words, what a person believes to be important will be perceived and the rest ignored. A stimulus triggers a representation of itself in the mind, thus perceptions can be distorted. A person may simply not see a stimulus if it is not one that he or she has already been trained to know. Even psychologists do not always apply their perceptual knowledge to perceptions made by other people. A There are numerous studies which are influenced by culture to support our biases regarding reality. In order to seriously study consciousness without cultural limitations, we must recognize that our ordinary state of consciousness is arbitrary. Even within the spectrum of human potential, we are prejudiced in believing that our culture is the best. This view limits our acceptance of the Semoi of Matasia, for example, who utilize spirit guides. The spectrum of experimental potential is the belief that two states of consciousness exist within one individual . Certain human potentials can be tapped into consciousness A but not B. This theory is the current factor for interest in the altered states. Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00789R001401080001-7
