(S/SK) MISSION: To describe the target site (Chesapeake Bay bridge- tunnel) in Stage 4 terminology. 2. (S/SK) VIEWER TASKING: Encrypted coordinates only. 3. (S/SK) COMMENTS: No Physical Inclemencies reported. Stress during this session was on the physical aspects of the site and the I column. As usual, 052's drawings contained much more information than the written words-perceptors. I am continuing to encourage 052 to draw whenever possible, and possible methods for increasing sensitivity to the information contained in the drawings. This is not a standard portion of the CRV training, but should be written into the training, for a great deal of information can be gained from the drawings a viewer makes, and is often lost to the viewer, simply for lack of having learned a way to break it out. 052 appears to have little trouble probing the drawings for information. 4. Approved For Release 2003/09/11 : CIA-RDP96-00789R001200110003-4 CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE-TUNNEL A combination of trestles and tunnels that stretches 17.6 miles across the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, providing a 2 lane vehicular crossing between Norfolk, Virginia and the tip of Cape Charles. The crossing was built with tunnels rather than above water to ensure that the U. S. Navy and commercial ships would have clear channels into and out of the Chesapeake Bay even if the crossings were bombed in time of war. The 2 concrete lined tunnels each 24 feet in diameter and 1 mile long carry the roadway deep beneath the main channel for ships. The ends of the tunnel are connected to man made islands 1500 feet long; the four islands were built in water with an average depth of 40 feet. Other parts of the crossing are provided by 2 steel bridges. The high level North Channel Bridge has a vertical clearance of 80 feet and a horizontal clearance of 300 feet for a clear channel. The medium-level Fishers' Inlet Bridge crosses a channel near Cape Charles. major length of the crossing is provided by 12.5 miles of precast concrete pile trestles carrying the 31 foot wide roadway, 25 feet above mean low water; the trestles were designed to withstand 20 foot waves from Atlantic storms.
