INTERPRESS 30gs 돈사회를 주체사상화하자 ! 1: North Korea's Kim Il Sung points the way NORTH KOREA Coming In from The Cold When the going gets tough, the tough ... well, go along. After denouncing the United Nations for decades, North Korea's xenophobic Communist gov- ernment announced last week that it would apply for full membership in the organiza- tion-right behind South Korea. "As the South Korean authori- ties insist on their uni- lateral U.N. member- ship," the North Korean Foreign Minis- try declared indignant- 'ly, "if we leave this alone, important is- sues related to the in- terest of the entire Ko- rean nation will be dealt with in a biased manner on the U.N. rostrum." Pyongyang's deci- sion to join the U.N. is : a glaring admission that its isolationist policy has been checkmated by Seoul's smooth cultivation of North Korea's main patrons, Moscow and Beijing. Anxious to extend burgeoning economic ties with capitalist-and prosperous- South Korea, neither the Soviet Union nor China is eager to op- pose South Korea's application for U.N. membership, leaving North Korea little choice but to seek a seat as well. - 1 Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00789R001000660001-8

Well known as Yiyo, he cut a splendid figure in his "suit of lights" (left, top) at a May 1985 contest in Madrid's Plaza de las Ventas (above). Three months later a tragic error would end the 21-year- old's spectacular career and intensify the national debate over bullfighting. After his final sword thrust he turned to the crowd, thinking the bull slain. But the animal rallied and lunged, piercing Yiyo through the heart (left, bottom). Before collapsing, he told a friend, Pali, that he knew it was the end. Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00789R001000660001-8

A Hasidic youngster caps off hours of study and prayer with ---- of course .- more study and prayer. Throughout the day he wears a tallis koton, or "little prayer shawl," as prescribed by Mosaic law. The garment's fringes, like those of the larger shawl worn by married men at morning devotions, are a constant reminder of the 613 divine commandments in the Torah -- the Hasid's ageless guide to God's law and daily living. 298 Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00789R001000660001-8
